I agree with this question to an extent because of a few reasons which I will mention in this blog prompt. Firstly, I feel that the news media should be blamed partially for the unhealthy paparazzi culture because they exaggerated the news. Also, they did not care about the feelings of the victims. In some cases, the news media even cooked up a story that was not there in the first place just to increase readership and earn money. They did not even care about the feelings of the victims. Thus, the news media should be blamed for exaggerating the news without considering about the feelings of the victims involved in these cases.
However, we should not put the blame entirely on the news media. There are reasons for their actions. Firstly, they need to earn money and increase the sale of the newspaper. Most people prefer reading gossips and news media have to often publish gossips to attract readers and increase their readership. Thus, we cannot place the blame entirely on the news media and these are also several factors we can consider. Thus, I only partially agree that the news media should be blamed for the unhealthy paparazzi culture and going to the extremes for sensational news.

Justice and Mercy
In the trial scene of Merchant of Venice, Shylock wants a pound of flesh from Antonio as a form of revenge but Portia only merely twisted the words in Shylock's bond which is cutting a flesh from Antonio but not dripping a drip of blood. In reality, the true justice in Shylock's case should be the pound of flesh since Antonio did not repay the debt in time. However, Portia gave Shylock the "justice" that he wants which is not true at all. It is unfair to Shylock in this case when Portia twisted the words on the bond. Another example will be the Lockerbie bomber incident, the convict was released because he had terminal prostate cancer. The judge has shown him mercy by freeing him allowing him to spend the last few moments of his life with his family. At the same time he has also served jail for a few years and has also received the appropriate punishment. The judge could have just let him stay in the jail to die but he decided to show mercy and released him since he was already dying. I agree with the verdict. Many people may think that what the Scottish did was wrong as the Lockerbie bomber has killed 270 people and he should not be shown mercy but I feel that what the judge did was right. Since he had already contacted terminal cancer, he would die soon so why not just set him free to spend his remaining time with his family?
There was no true mercy in this scene. At first, Portia appealed to Shylock to show mercy many times but when Shylock rejects all of her appeals, Portia did not show any more mercy to him. When Shylock found out that it was impossible for him to get Antonio’s pound of flesh, he agreed to just take the money and let matters rest. Portia could have just stopped at that stage but she did not and made Shylock give up all his fortune. There was no true mercy shown by Portia. Shylock might not have been killed but making him convert to Christianity was just like killing him. Therefore Portia did not show true mercy to Shylock.
In Merchant of Venice, Portia was able to manipulate law as she used words to turn the tables around and used law to “defeat” Shylock. In the Lockerbie bomber case, the judge was also able to manipulate justice and law by freeing the bomber. The bomber was supposed to be jailed until he die but because he had terminal cancer, the judge used his powers to free him from jail.
Education in Singapore
I disagree with the issues that the student has raised in the article. Firstly, I want to comment on the point where the student said that education is only about memorizing facts here and there and they are not given a chance to ask questions in the class. I personally disagree with this point because I feel that in Hwa Chong, we are not treated in that attitude. Probably, it is because we are studying in different environments so we have different mindsets. I feel that memorizing isn’t wrong and there are times we need to memorize, like certain theories or stuff. I also disagree with her point that we are not given opportunities to ask questions in class and be inquisitive. In fact, it is absolutely the way round! We are given a lot of opportunities instead. We are always told to have group discussions and voice our own opinions in lessons. We also have a component which is oral communications. This component is to teach us to communicate more in class so that we can be nurtured into a leader. Therefore, I disagree with these two points.
Secondly, I also want to disagree that PCME lessons are totally useless. In Hwa Chong, we are given PCME periods to learn more about moral values. It is teaches us to be more mature. However, I do agree in primary school, our moral education lessons were often taken away just because we need to catch up with the syllabus. I still remember in primary school, when I was primary 6, our CME and social studies are taken away just to learn more about the core subjects to prepare us better for PSLE. However, that does not mean that these lessons are meaningless. Both good grades and good character are equally important but if you have a good grades and not a good character, you will not call yourself a successful person. It is the same if you have good character and no good grades. What a school is to teach students what makes up a good character. The rest is all up to the student whether he/she is willing to learn and really follow those values.
I feel that the writer’s tone is quite appropriate. She does not use some violent words or do verbal attacks on the minister. Also, I feel that her comments are polite towards the minster. However, I feel that her comments are a bit too exaggerated and too straightforward. This might let the minister to think that he has not done well enough. All in all, she seeks the minister's understanding and thus I feel that this is a well crafted letter.
If I were to write a letter to the minister of education, I will raise some issues on solutions to improve the education in Singapore and to give the students studying in Singapore a more conducive environment. However, I would say that Singapore is pushing too much and forcing the students to learn. Probably, there could be some solutions to this problem. A successful person does not only have good grades but also other talents. But the thing is that education in Singapore is too academic based especially during the graduating year.
For Love or Money?
In my opinion, it is not necessarily so. However, I agree money is only a small factor in a relationship as in this society, one cannot survive without money. I feel that true love is the real major factor in a relationship. However, I will not be with someone that is necessarily rich. I will only consider the amount of love between us. Being in a relationship with someone because of money is not love for the person, but love for the person’s money instead. However, money is something that a couple should work together for in order to make their lives more comfortable and better. If a relationship started because of money, this relationship will not last at all because there is not any true love between the two of them. I feel that we should not start a relationship because of money nor even trying to play with other's feelings and cheat them of their money.
I think that there is an upward trend of relationships and marriages valuing money over other qualities especially, love. Nowadays, people are getting more materialistic. They only value a relationship for money. They only want to live off the other person just because he is rich. They only care about money. Everyone should know that love is something that money cannot buy with. Thus, I feel that we should try to treasure love as much as we can. Money does not matter that much. It is true love that actually matters because life without love is really boring and meaningless.

How has war evolved from the past to the present?
War has indeed changed a lot from the past to present. The reasons and weapons used for war are different in the present from the past. For example, the wars in the chinese kingdoms in the past. Those wars were fought with swords and spears. At that time, guns were not invented. Even english countries at that time used swords to fight. When guns and bombs were invented, the way war was fought changed drastically. People started using guns and bombs to fight a war. This actually caused more destruction than in the past. Chemical bombs were also used and these could affect many people for their lives. Besides the obvious change of usage of weapons, there was also change in why war was fought. In the past, war is usually fought for power and resources. Now times have changed. People do not fight a war to get power or resources but for freedom or democracy instead.
Therefore, I can conclude that war has evolved through the weapons used, the reasons and the increase of violence and destruction.
Reflection on "The Soldier"
Young men at the age of 18 in Singapore will have to go through National Service. Many will ask why National Service is compulsory and important in Singapore. In my opinion, National Service is very important to Singapore. Singapore might not even survive without national service in the early independent years. In the past, National Service was introduced to address the problem of racial and religious tensions and also for defense. Singaporeans had to protect their own country as Singapore is a very small country and could be easily attacked and conquered by other countries. However, we can all prevent these incidents from happening with National Service.
In this poem, "The Soldier", Rupert Brooke expresses his love for his country, England and he is willing to sacrifice for England where his homeland was. However, this spirit may not be found in most Singaporeans. Some possess this kind of spirit but some do not. Some examples are moaning and complaining about the life in an army. This shows that many people do not like to protect his homeland and it goes to shows that he does not even love his country at all. One should be willing to sacrifice for his homeland and not do it reluctantly. I should be happy to sacrifice for my country as Singapore is the country who shaped me and watched me grow up. So, I feel that I will have the same spirit of patriotism for Singapore like Rupert Brookes because it is my honour to protect Singapore from any attacks.

Title: Islands of the blue dolphins
Author: Scott O' Dell
Author: Scott O' Dell
Summary: The main character is a girl named Karana people live in a village called Ghalas-at on the island, gathering roots and fishing to supply the tribe. One day, a ship of Aleuts, led by a Russian named Captain Orlov, arrive and persuade the natives into letting them hunt sea otter on the island in return for other goods. However, the Aleuts lied to the islanders and tried to leave without paying them. When they are confronted by Chief Chowig, Karana's father, a battle breaks out, taking lives on both sides, including Chowig's. The tribe is decimated by the battle, while the Aleuts leave the island, leaving little payment for the otters they hunted. Karana's father, Chief Chowig, died along with other men of Ghalas-at.
After Ramo is killed, Karana decides to leave her village forever. She burns it and sets up camp on a rock near the headland. She makes tools to defend herself, although the laws of her tribe bar a woman from making weapons. She watches everyday for the ship that will take her away, but it never comes. One day, she takes a canoe and tries to make the journey herself. Though she is able to paddle a great distance, her canoe starts to leak after a few days, and, realizing she cannot reach her destination, she turns back.
Knowing that she could be on Ghalas-at for some time, Karana builds herself a house and some stronger weapons. Once she has finished these necessities, Karana decides it is time to exact her revenge on the wild dogs that killed her brother. She used fire to scare them out of their cave, and strikes down their leader along with several others. The lead dog is strong, however, and is able to escape even with an arrow lodged deeply in his chest. Days later, Karana finds the same dog, barely alive. Instead of killing him, she takes him home and nurses him back to health. The two become fast friends, and the dog, whom Karana calls Rontu even defends her from his former pack mates.
Karana continues her work on her house, and becomes more and more comfortable on the island. She makes herself new clothes and befriends a number of other animals, including birds, an otter, and a fox. Years later, when Rontu dies, Karana takes his son from the cave of the wild dogs. She tames the dog, and names him Rontu-Aru.
After her long stay on the Island of the Blue Dolphins, another ship comes to her harbor. Realizing that it is time for her to leave, and missing human contact, Karana gathers her things and, with Rontu-Aru, leaves Ghalas-at.

Title: Odd and the Frost Giants
Author: Neil Gaiman
Illustrator: Brian Helquist
Summary: Odd is a 12-year old boy very much at odds with the rest of his Viking environment. He’s lame in one leg and even he admits it was due to his own failure to think through his actions. His father is dead and his mother has remarried a man who has no particular interest in Odd. Winter has dragged on for far too long, affecting overall spirits in the village.
In the story, Odd encounters members of the Norse pantheon in animal form (with one of the priceless scenes being one with Odd awakened by those animals indulging in human speech when they think he’s still asleep.) Ultimately, Odd thinks his way through the resolution of the conflict that has kept Spring from arriving when it ought. He returns to his home and to his mother having grown in a variety of ways.

HBL Task 2
Children in the Darkness
Henry Bechtold
Henry Bechtold
There are children in the darkness
Who have not seen the light
There are children in the darkness
Who someone will teach to fight
Chalk and blackboards will not be
To this door there is no key
From this life they can not flee
And these children are not free
To this door there is no key
From this life they can not flee
And these children are not free
Could we simply light a candle
Could we give them half a chance
Could we teach them how to read
Could we teach them how to dance
Could we give them half a chance
Could we teach them how to read
Could we teach them how to dance
Or will a war consume them
Their body and their soul
Will their life and blood be poured
Down some endless thirsty hole
Their body and their soul
Will their life and blood be poured
Down some endless thirsty hole
Back into the darkness
From which there is no flight
Back into the darkness
Into which there shines no light
From which there is no flight
Back into the darkness
Into which there shines no light
Point of View: This poem was written in the first-person account by Henry M Bechtold in 2010. Just before christmas, he was in Saigon, a place in Vietnam and was trying to write poems there. He often goes back to Vietnam because his "soul lives in Vietnam." This could imply that he himself was one of the soldiers fighting in the war then and as with many war veterans, they find it difficult to adapt back to their own homeland after the suffering they had seen. This poem was written after Henry watched the television and saw the picture of a small boy with a helmet and an automatic rifle.
Situation and Setting: This poem shows conflicting images of the author's mindset of what should actually be the life of a child in contrast with how the children suffering in war really are. It is in a situation where the children were forced to fight in the war, when they were supposed to be enjoying their childhood like most children do over the world. From line 7 and 8, "From this life they can not flee, And these children are not free". This line shows that children are restrained by war, and they are too weak and helpless to evade the evil and cruelty of the war.
Language/Diction: Diction and the language in this poem have certain connotations. The word 'light' and 'darkness' have been repeated many times in the poem. Light is a usual comparison with hope while darkness usually symbolizes despair and death. Therefore, from the many comparisons, it can be seen that when children are involved in the war, they cannot escape it and will live in sadness, while others remain happy and ignorant.
Personal Response:
Upon reading the poem, I sympathise children who are involved in war. Unlike us normal people, they have to go through years of fear and unhappiness at such a tender age. This poem allows me to understand the children are going through a lot of hardship and are suffering. From the poem, I learnt to feel fortunate as we are very lucky and happy compared to the "war children" no matter what problems we face. Also, I learnt that we should not take things for granted, for example, peace. We always have to keep in mind that our lives are very lucky compared to the people who are in wars. We must cherish what we have and always feel lucky.

HBL Task 1
Children in the Darkness
-Was written in year 2009, during Christmas
-Written by Henry M Bechtold when in his hotel room during his stay at Saigon.
-The poet was inspired by the photo of a young boy carrying an automatic rifle going
to war in the news.
In the poem, the poet talk about Children that are involved in war and that
they are being robbed of their childhood and forced to be engaged with war.
In the past twenty years, there has been estimated that there are over millions
of children that has been used in the war or dragged into with their parents.
Children are usually used as nurses, spies. They are in charge if guarding
resources, general camps, drumboys, and worst of all, infantries soldiers who

Children are usually used as nurses, spies. They are in charge if guarding

are put at the front line to test out for enemy mines.
2 million children died
5 million disabled
12 million homeless
1 million orphan
10 million shell-shocked.
Children are treated as lower classes of soldiers or recruits in the war as in
the context to the poem, Children in the darkness. They are given high risks
task as they are of low value
This picture shows 6 skinny boys and their mother. The boys are very skinny, like the one on the bottom left, his ribcage could be seen. This is because they had no food to eat and they are probably praying for food. The background shows a forest, this shows that their house had been destroyed and they had to stay in a forest instead. The war resulted in the lack of proper meals for the people and people are now starving. This also shows poverty as the family does not have enough money to buy food. Hence, the photo conveys a miserable mood of the people in the photo. This is because the boys are starving and the mother could not do anything to help them.
This photograph is in black and white because the photographer wants to convey the message of the sad and gloomy atmosphere. If a coloured photo was used instead, it will represent happiness and people will feel cheerful after looking at this photo. Thus, a black and white photo was used instead to show the hopelessness and despair in the skinny boys. It is a way of telling the viewer the general atmosphere of the picture or photograph. It shows the negative effects caused by the war and also makes us feel very sympathetic for the people who are affected by the war. Also, the photographer, by capturing this photo, is trying to tell the public the harm of war and to a certain extent, trying to do his part in advising people to stop fighting.

Dear Mr Nick Jones,
I am Chen Xingzhu from Hwa Chong Institution. My English teacher told us to write this letter to you. I was shocked when I hear the news of the devastating earthquake in Japan. Thus, I am writing this letter to encourage you to be more optimistic. I totally sympathize with you and your country.
Although the tsunami had knocked out all sources of power at the plant meaning that the reactor cores couldn't be kept cool. The Internet was quickly awash with speculation and worse-case scenarios. Even though you was affected by the earthquake zone, but I am relieved to hear that you are safe and sound After this surviving this disaster, you would probably feel very worried of your family, and how you would continue to cope with your new lifestyle. Instead of looking at the devastation around you, you should be thankful that you had managed to survive.
I give you my greatest condolences and hope that you can continue to live happily. I also hope that Japan can recover from the disaster and be strong again.
Yours Sincerely,
Xingzhu

Short story final draft
This is a true story that I had kept it in me for the past few years. It had been a horrifying experience for me as not only to my status as a student is affected; my stupid act had also brought shame to my whole family. Relatives, neighbours kept giving us the sarcastic looks whenever we met at shopping centres.
There was once when my sister and I went to buy groceries at the supermarket near Woodlands, Singapore, we met a close neighbor to my family. Instead of the usual greetings and warmth smile crafted on their lips, that meeting proved to be an embarrassment to me. My sister, who is the innocent party, too was shamed because of my wrongdoings. Whispering to their two young sons was a remark that would surely break the heart of anyone who listened to it. “Make sure you don’t mix or even play with them again. I do not want our family to become thieves. ”
Holding my sister’s hand, we solemnly walked away from them. Tears were about to flow but I held it back. I wanted to prove to not only them but also the whole world that I had changed and will make my parents proud again…You may be wondering what I committed to receive this harsh repercussion. Well, this is my story…
During the school holidays in June, I went to Causeway Point in Woodlands to buy something that my aunt requested me to purchase. As it was the first time at the supermarket, I went browsing around the supermarket before buying the items for my aunt. While I was at the toy’s section, something caught my attention. Sitting prominently on the shelves was a game console. Peering at its price’s tag, I was utterly disappointed. The price was beyond my budget. Coincidentally, I saw another game console sitting beside the one I liked, with a much cheaper price. Due to the desire to own the game console that I liked, I did the ultimate mistake in my life! With my heart pounding vigorously, I looked around to see if there was anyone nearby or looking at me. Once I saw that the surroundings were clear, swiftly as lightning, I swapped the price tags.
Mix feelings of fear, guilt and triumph overwhelmed within me. Forgetting my original purpose, I proceeded to the cashier to pay for the game console. With my heart like thousand of beats pounding the smooth skin of the drum, I handed over the console for the lady to scan the item. As the barcode reader accepted the transactions, I paid for the console and hurriedly dashed out of the shopping centre, I was grinning and imagining the great fun that I will have, all the way to the bus interchange. I just cannot wait to reach home!
As I was waiting for the bus to arrive, I sat at the bench and pondered on the smoothness of my illegal act. Suddenly, my thoughts were rudely interrupted by a tap on the shoulder. It was the hand of a big burly Indian man. With a grouse voice, he commanded me to follow him into the shopping centre. Too shocked to reciprocate, I followed his instructions. He then took out the game console and asked how much I paid for it. I smugly told him the price and showed him the receipt. He gave me a sarcastic smile and went out to have it checked. He came back shortly and told me the original price.
At first I denied by saying that I had paid according to the price stated on the tag but when I saw him calling the Police, I realized that my defence had fallen on deaf ears. The next 15minutes were proven the longest in my life. I kept thinking about the things that were bound to happen to me.
Soon after the Police arrived and certain enquires from them were answered, I was handcuffed and lead out the supermarket. Thousands of eyes fixed onto me, as I was lead to the Police car. Whispers of remarks could be heard along the way, and tears soon swelled in my eyes and remorse filled me.
Not long after my belongings were surrendered for safekeeping, I was thrown inside the lockup. My eyes kept peering at the four walls and cold floor. I sat at the corner and cried my hearts out. After the procedural steps were taken, I was allowed to call for my aunt to bail me out.
My distraught aunt came to bail me and after some stern warning from the investigating officer, I was allowed to go home. I was to report back to him in two weeks, as only by that time, I would be informed of the result prior to the investigation. While awaiting the result from the investigation, my life was indeed a restless one. I kept thinking and worrying about my fate and going into the Boys Home. Throughout the days, I often cried and had numerous sleepless nights. My family was also affected by my wrongdoings. My parents kept quarrelling because of me and our family was the talk of everybody in the block.
After all those days of anxiousness, it was the day where I need to report back to my investigation officer. Once in his office, I was told that I would be placed on probation and a curfew was to be imposed on me. I was indeed lucky as the management from where I had stolen from decided not to pursue the case. I thanked my investigating officer numerous times and swore that I will never do the act anymore. I really regretted doing such a stupid thing and brought shame to my family. I will never commit any offence again!

Scout, formally known as Jean Louise Finch, talks about how her brother Jem, older by 4 years, broke his arm badly at the elbow when he was thirteen. To this day she insists that the entire incident began with the Ewell family, the most wretched family in Maycomb County, but Jem disagrees. He believes that the whole thing started way back when Dill came from Meridian, Mississippi, to spend his first summer in Maycomb with his aunt, Rachel Haverford, the Finch's neighbor. To take a broader view of things, Scout suggests that it all started when General Jackson chased the Creek Indians north and Simon Finch, their ancestor, moved up the river and built Finch's Landing. Because they couldn't decide who was right, they asked their father, Atticus, and he says that they were both right. Scout begins relating the stories of her childhood that build up to the night.

Montgomery bus boycott and scottsboro trials
a. Rosa Parks- Parks was ordered to enter at the back of the bus and as she was heading to the back of the bus, the bus driver drove off without her. She never wanted to to board a bus driven by James Blake after then but on December 1 1955, she was sitting in the front-most row for black people but was later asked by the bus driver to move back to create a row for the whites, only to realize that the bus driver is James Blake but she refused to move despite the fact that bus drivers are given the authority to assign seats. She was prosecuted and fined but she appealed and her arrest triggered a series of events. She was known as one of the pioneers of civil rights movement.
Scottsboro trials- On Mrach 25, 1931, a freight train was stopped in Paint Rock, a tiny community in Northern Alabama, and nine young African American men who had been riding the rails were arrested. As two white women - one underage - descended from the freight cars, they accused the men of raping them on the train. Within a month the first man was found guilty and sentenced to death. There followed a series sensational trials, condemning the other men solely on the testimony of the older woman, a known prostitute, who was attempting to avoid prosecution under the Mann Act, prohibiting taking a minor across state for lines for immoral purposes, like prostitution.
b. Both trials are related as they involved white females accusing innocent black men of raping. In TKAM, Mayella Ewell accused Tom Robinson of attempted rape when she herself seduced Tom while in the Scottsboro trials, the prostitutes accused the blacks of rape because she wanted to escape prosecution for immoral acts.
c. The trials are similar in the time they took place which is in the 1930s and they both took place in Alabama. The trial began with the charge of rape made by white women against African American men and the poor white status of the accusers was a critical issue. Both have a central figure in which a central figure of the Scottsboro trials was a heroic judge, a member of Alabama Bar who overturned a guilty jury verdict against African American men while in TKAM, the central figure is Atticus, lawyer, legislator and member of the Alabama Bar, who defends an African American man. Both judges went against public sentiments in trying to protect the rights of the African American defendants. Both jury ignored evidence that was evident that the African American men were innocent. Both also include the attitudes of the Southern women and poor whites that complicated the trials.

The Civil RIghts Movement
a)1950
b)The civil rights movement was a worldwide political movement for equality before the law. It was accompanied by much civil unrest and popular rebellion. The process was long and tenuous in many countries, and most of these movements did not fully achieve their goals although, the efforts of these movements did lead to improvements in the legal rights of previously oppressed groups of peoples. The civil rights movement in the United States refers partially to a set of noted events and the reform movements in that country that aimed to abolish public and private acts of racial discrimination and racism against African Americans and other disadvantaged groups between 1954 to 1968, particularly in the southern United States. It is sometimes referred to as the Second Reconstruction era.
c)Over 25 race riots occur in the summer of 1919 with 38 killed in Chicago. 70 blacks, including 10 veterans, are lynched in the South.
5000 federal troops are sent by Pres. Kennedy to allow Meredith to register for classes. Riots result in 2 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
d)President Lyndon B.
e)As a result to the civil rights movement African-Americans are now as equal as whites.
f)The novel was set in the period of the civil rights movement where the blacks were still segregated with the whites. Tom in the novel, was convicted because of the discrimination of Blacks during that era.

Jim Crow's Law
a)Jim Crow is a subject of a song performed by Thomas Dartmouth “Daddy” Rice. Rice was a white man who performed in blackface. Like most blackface performers, Rice denigrated Blacks through his music, his stereotypical behavior, and his rude jokes.Jim Crow was the name of the racial caste system which operated primarily, but not exclusively in southern and border states, between 1877 and the mid-1960s. Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-Black laws. It was a way of life. Under Jim Crow, African Americans were relegated to the status of second class citizens.
b)Jim Crow laws allowed for segregation in businesses, neighborhoods, schools, and other facets of daily life. African Americans were forced to use separate sections of buses and trains, sit in separate sections of restaurants, and attend separate schools than white Americans.
c)This type of segregation led to fierce civil rights struggles, especially in regards to Jim CrowLaws that segregated schools. Several key events – including Rosa Parks’s refusal to move from her seat on a segregated bus, as well as several bus boycotts – built up and provided enough tension in society that the question of segregation finally had to be dealt with.
d) Yes. Blacks and Whites go to different churches.
Civil War
a)South Carolina,Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas Louisiana, irginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
b)Abraham Lincoln
c)When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in 1860. Southerners thought the government was becoming too strong. They did not think the government had the right to tell them how they should live. Southerners felt if they stayed in the United States, the North would control them. The northern states were called the Union. President Lincoln said he would fight to keep the southern states as part of the United States. There were Union forts on Confederate land. The Confederates wanted Union soldiers to leave these forts. In Charleston, South Carolina there was a Union fort called Fort Sumter. The Union soldiers refused to leave this fort, so the Confederates fired cannons at the fort on April 12, l861. This was the beginning of the Civil War.
d)1861
e) The issue that was left out of our Constitution, that could not be resolved by peaceful consensus, was settled by the Civil War. The North won, and the seceded states were eventually reabsorbed into the Union.
f) It all started because of the Southerners were afraid that the Northerners would overpower them and this can related to the novel as it shows the relationship of the two parts of America whereby they were very cautious of each other just like in the novel where White and Black are socially different.
Slavery
a)Slavery started when the colonies were first set-up in Virginia The first batch of African slaves came to America in 1619.A Dutch slave trader exchanged his cargo of Africans for food in 1619. The Africans became indentured servants. The popular conception of a racial-based slave system did not develop until the 1680's.
b)Africa
c)The white Southerners
d)Yes.They could not gather in-groups of 4 or more because their owners thought they would plan an escape. If the slaves got caught trying to get away, their owners would beat them or cut body parts off so they could not escape again. If they got away without anyone seeing them, they usually run away to Canada where they would be free. They cannot leave their owners property without a written pass because the slave owners wanted control over the slaves. They could not own weapons because the slaves might shoot their owner. Slaves were not allowed to learn how to read or write because the slaves may start to think about freedom and try to escape.
e) Slavery was the cost of racism of White against Black as slaves were from African and they were Blacks. They were mostly owned by the Whites which result in the Whites looking down on the Blacks. The novel is about a Black who was found guilty by the White judge of something he did not do and there was clearly enough evidence to acquit him. The study of slavery definitely help me understand the novel better as it is very related to slavery. It tells me how discrimination of Blacks started.

Messy Room
Messy Room by Shel Silverstein
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or--
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!
This poem is humorous because the poet says that his underwear is hanging on the lamp, and the books are all in the closet, while his smelly sock is so sweaty that it is stuck to the wall. He even named a lizard under his bed Ed. Also, the poet is quick to point fingers at other and feels that the owner of this room should be ashamed. However, the fact is that the room was his.
In the past, i had a messy room and this poem has enlightened me and not to always blame others when i am in the wrong and also to be responsible.
